Green jade is an ornamental gemstone split into two distinct minerals: nephrite and jadeite. Both are exceptionally tough, highly valued for carving, and famous for their rich green shades driven by chromium or iron.

Mineral Types

• Jadeite: Harder and rarer; vivid translucent greens are called Imperial Jade (sourced largely in Myanmar/Burma).
• Nephrite: Tougher, fibrous, and deep spinach-green or celadon tones; found in New Zealand (pounamu / greenstone), China, and Canada.

Properties and Care

• Hardness: 6 to 6.5 for nephrite, 6.5 to 7 for jadeite on the Mohs scale.
• Toughness: Extremely high due to tightly matted crystal structures.
• Care: Clean safely using warm, soapy water and a soft cloth; avoid harsh chemicals and ultrasonic cleaners.

Cultural Meaning

• Symbolism: Widely regarded as a talisman for good luck, wealth, health, and harmony.
• Traditions: Deeply sacred in Chinese history, Mesoamerican cultures, and Māori traditions in New Zealand.
