Pyrite, widely known as "fool's gold," is a brassy yellow iron sulphide mineral (FeS₂) with a brilliant metallic lustre. Its name comes from the Greek word pyr (fire), because it creates sparks when struck against steel.

Key Physical Properties

  • Chemical Composition: Iron disulphide (FeS₂, roughly 46% iron and 54% sulfur)
  • Hardness: 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale (it can scratch glass, unlike real gold)
  • Crystal Shape: Often forms striking geometric cubes, octahedrons, or pyritohedron's with striated faces
  • Streak: Greenish-black

Pyrite vs. Real Gold

  • Hardness & Brittleness: Pyrite is hard and brittle; real gold is soft, malleable, and dense.
  • Association: Real gold is frequently found inside or alongside pyrite deposits (auriferous pyrite), which is why they often occur in the same geological areas.

Uses and Significance

  • History: Used in prehistoric times to strike fire and later utilized in early wheel-lock firearms.
  • Modern Industry: Occasionally processed to extract associated trace metals like gold, copper, cobalt, or nickel, and used in producing sulphur dioxide and sulfuric acid.
  • Collectibles & Metaphysics: Prized by mineral collectors for its sharp geometric shapes; in crystal healing and alternative practices, it is viewed as a symbol of wealth, energy, and protection.
