About Agatized Seashells
An agatized seashell is a fossil where the original organic shell material (calcium carbonate) has been replaced or filled with silica, such as chalcedony or agate, over millions of years. This permineralization process preserves the shell's outer shape and internal details while giving it a durable, glassy, and often translucent crystal structure.
How Agatized Shells Form
- Burial: A marine or freshwater shell is rapidly buried under layers of sediment.
- Mineral Percolation: Underground water rich in dissolved silica flows through the sediments.
- Replacement: The silica slowly swaps out the calcium carbonate molecule by molecule, or fills internal cavities left by decaying soft tissue.
- Coloration: Trace minerals like iron, manganese, or other elements create diverse hues including brown, black, grey, red, and white.
