What is Blue Apatite?
Blue Apatite is a natural calcium phosphate mineral prized for its striking ocean-blue, teal, and turquoise colours — a gem that deceives the eye and captivates the soul.
Scientific Properties
- Chemical Composition: Calcium phosphate, Ca₅(PO₄)₃(OH,F,Cl)
- Mohs Hardness: 5 — relatively soft and the index mineral for this hardness level
- Crystal System: Hexagonal
- Luster: Vitreous (glass-like) to slightly greasy
- Name Origin: From the Greek apatē meaning "to deceive" — often mistaken for aquamarine, tourmaline, or peridot
- Major Sources: Madagascar, Norway, Brazil, Mexico, India, and Russia
Uses & Limitations
- Jewellery: Due to its softness, best suited for earrings, pendants, or occasional-wear rings with protective bezel settings
- Industrial & Medical: Primary source of phosphorus for fertilizers; synthetic hydroxylapatite is used in bone and dental implant coatings
Metaphysical Associations
